98% Guys Don’t Know The Way to Determine Diamond Carat Weight
We all know that the best way to tell the carat weight of a diamond is to weigh it, but what should you do when you cannot do so? It is actually possible to infer the carat weight of a diamond by measuring its size. Keep in mind that an estimate made this way is by no means 100% precise, but it will at least give you an approximate idea of how much a diamond weighs.
A 1 carat (or ct) diamond weighs 0.20 grams. Contrary to popular belief, the carat is not the size of the diamond. A diamond’s size is measured in millimeters, length by width — in other words, the diameter of the diamond for 18k gold Van Cleef necklace replica. It typically takes about 250 tons of rock mining to produce a single 1 carat diamond. That’s why diamonds are rare and expensive.
Diamonds come in a variety of shapes and carat weights. A diamond cutter’s highest priority is to maximize carat weight. The larger the diamond, the rarer and therefore more expensive it is. Diamonds are weighed very precisely, to the nearest 0.01ct.
As you can see above, the size of a 1-carat diamond is approximately 6.5mm (based on the assumption that the stone is cut to fake van cleef & arpels Perlée clovers ring). On the other hand, the size of a .5 carat diamond is approximately 5.2mm. Even though the carat weight is 50% of a 1 carat stone, it doesn’t face up twice as small!
Likewise, the physical size of a 2-carat diamond (8.2mm diameter) isn’t twice as big as that of a 1-carat diamond (6.5mm diameter). Hopefully, this clears up the misunderstanding of a carat weight and actual sizes.
